Why: Howie Hawkins, the recent Green Party candidate for Governor, will hold a news conference in Albany on Friday, January 23, to respond to Governor Cuomo’s proposed budget and State of the State address.

Hawkins will also discuss the recent arrest of Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and the culture of corruption that dominates the state Capitol.

The news conference will be in the LCA press room of the Legislative Office Building at 1 PM.

In addition to the need for ethics reform, Hawkins will discuss Cuomo’s education agenda and attacks on teachers; energy; taxes and fiscal relief for local governments; and poverty.

Why: The Buffalo Teachers Federation endorsed Howie Hawkins because he defends the right to education, calls for full funding for public schools and opposes the plans to turn Lafayette, Bennett, East and MLK into private charter schools, including giving these wealthy charters the public school buildings! He also calls for a $15 minimum wage, ban on fracking and 100% clean energy by 2030. He supports organizing efforts after the elections to further build the independent politics of the people.

Why: Matt Funiciello, Green Party candidate for the 21st Congressional District and Howie Hawkins, Green Party candidate for NY State governor, will hold a press conference at the Fort Edward GE plant (381 Broadway, Fort Edward) on Saturday, November 1, at 3:00 PM.

The press conference will focus on the corporate welfare given to GE and its decision to abandon the workers in Fort Edward by moving the plant.

The Center for Law and Justice will hold a press conference to outline its call for a major shift in the state's criminal justice system. It will be held in the small auditorium of the Albany Public Library on Washington Avenue at 10:00 AM on Saturday, November 1, 2014. To date, at least one of the major gubernatorial candidates has promised to participate in the press conference.

The conference will precede a major community Speak-Out scheduled for 10:30 AM at the Library and is entitled, Police, Prisons, and Mass Incarceration. The Center for Law and Justice, one of the Speak-Out sponsors, has invited all 4 gubernatorial candidates to attend and participate along with a host of local government officials, legislators, and community leaders invited to the Speak-Out by community groups..

The Hawkins for Governor campaign has a pair of radio ads running in Ithaca, Woodstock, Syracuse and Buffalo.

Green Party Gubernatorial candidate Howie Hawkins is holding a press conference to highlight the recent Capital New York investigative report that revealed how the Cuomo Administration tampered with a federal U.S. Geological Survey fracking study that New York State commissioned in 2011 to study naturally occurring methane in water wells in Broome, Chemung, Chenango, Tioga, Delaware and Otsego. This study was commissioned at the same time that the administration was considering a pilot fracking project in the Southern Tier in Broome, Chemung, Chenango, Tioga and Steuben counties. According to the report, the Cuomo Administration officials had extensive communications with the USGS study authors and asked that they downplay or erase the original descriptions of environmental and health risks associated with fracking.

The only candidate who supports a ban on hydrofracking, Hawkins will highlight the extent to which gas drilling infrastructure has developed in New York under the Cuomo Administration.

According to Capital New York, the final version of the edited excised a reference to risks associated with gas pipelines and underground storage—a reference which could have complicated the Cuomo administration's potential support for a number of other controversial energy projects, including a proposed gas storage facility in the Finger Lakes region that local wine makers say could destroy their burgeoning industry.

At the press conference, Hawkins will reference a map of New York that shows all the gas infrastructure proposed or already operational in the state. "When previously asked about why his administration tampered with the report, Cuomo said simply, 'I don't know.' That's unacceptable," said Hawkins. "New Yorkers deserve answers from Cuomo who for years has promised to listen to the science, not alter it. I intend to ask him what he knew and when."

Hawkins will also touch on what he saw and learned in his recent trip to the frack sites in PA.
